My father passed away at the young age of 38, leaving behind his wife and four young children, all under the age of 11. I was only 6 years old at the time, but can still remember the day it happened like it was yesterday.
He was a Vietnam Veteran and was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease. I remember him being sick a few times when I was young but he always got better. Unfortunately though, the cancer spread to his heart and he was unable to fight it any longer. He died on May 12, 1987 and not a day goes by when I don’t think about him
Luckily before he died, my Mom and Dad bought a life insurance policy. And after my Dad passed, my family survived on that policy. We lived in a small home and my Mom was staying home with all us. The death benefit from that policy covered our day to day living expenses, and gave my mom one less problem to worry about at the time

I remember a man coming over to the house, we used to call him “Uncle Leo,” and he and my Mom would sit at our dining room table with papers spread all over and would talk so seriously. What I know now is that “Uncle Leo” was the life insurance agent who sold my parents the policy, and he would come over the house and talk to my mom about all of her finances and make sure everything was going well with the family.
I didn’t understand this at the time, but now that I am older and work for a life insurance company, I truly understand the benefits life insurance provides. Especially now, I am 32, and expecting my first child this January. I look back at my mom’s situation when she was my age and how she was able to get through such tragedy as a young widow with 4 children. I want to make sure that my new family is protected and completely covered with life Insurance, just as it protected and covered my family growing up.
